Thank you all for an excellent first week! Have a great long weekend–I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday!
Also, if you’re having trouble posting comments, remember that you can always email me with questions, advice, or whatever: mshalesclass@gmail.com
Tonight’s homework (due Tuesday, 9/4/07):
English 2: Stereotype Poem. You may write this in any way you want. One option, though, is the following:
- Begin by stating “Yeah, I’m [some aspect of your identity]“
- Then say “That doesn’t mean…” and list several incorrect assumptions that someone might make about you based on that part of who you are.
- Finish by listing some truths about who you actually are.
English 4: Write a rough draft of your This I Believe essay. This should be between 350 and 500 words long. For some additional guidelines and suggestions, please visit ThisIBelieve.org.
English 4HP: Same as for English 4.
Tonight’s homework:
English 2: Binders. If you have not already done so, prepare a binder (or a section of a binder) exclusively for English class. Create sections for 1) Classwork/Right Nows, 2) Class Notes, 3) Essay Work, and 4) Handouts.
English 4: 1) Prepare an English class binder as directed for English 2, above. 2) Interview a person who has been influential in shaping you as a person. Ask “What is the one belief that you most hope I will carry with me throughout my life?” Then ask follow-up questions. Create a page of Cornell-style notes during and after the interview–bring these notes to class tomorrow.
English 4HP: Same as for English 4.
Tonight’s homework:
English 2: Stereotype: A belief, based on an assumption, about an entire group. 1) Define stereotype in your own words. 2) Find an image (from a magazine, billboard, etc.) that shows a stereotype. 3) Write a paragraph explaining what the stereotype is.
English 4: Write about one thing you strongly believe. Use anecdotes and examples (from your life, history, the news, etc.) to explain why you believe it.
English 4HP: Same as for English 4.
Tonight’s homework:
All classes are writing anecdotes–short stories about a single event from their lives.
English 2: Assumptions. 1) 2 definitions of assumption, one from a dictionary, and one in your own words. 2) An anecdote about a time when you made an assumption about someone else or vice-versa.
English 4: Finish writing scary childhood anecdotes. (If you missed today’s class, write an anecdote–at least 1 page–about a scary thing that happened to you when you were a child.)
English 4HP: Same as for English 4.
It was a pleasure to meet all of you in class today! I’m really looking forward to this school year. Please leave a comment letting me know you stopped by!
Tonight’s homework:
English 2: Classroom Management Plan Agreement, completed and signed by student and parent/guardian. This is due tomorrow, Tuesday, 8/28.
English 4: Same as for English 2.
English 4HP: Same as for English 2.
