Anecdote: a brief story about a single event–usually personal, historical, or funny.
Annotate: to make critical or explanatory notes on a text; to “mark up” a text as you read it. To annotate a text for this class, use the following symbols:
- *, !, or ______ : Parts that are interesting, important, or startling
- Circle a word when you don’t know its meaning—draw line to definition
- ?: Parts that are confusing
- }: In your own words
- >: Notes to yourself; connections to other ideas
Define 2x: find and write down the best possible definition from the dictionary and then write a second definition in your own words.
Homework Log: a two-paragraph response to an assigned reading text.
- Paragraph 1: Summary of the main ideas of the text.
- Paragraph 2: Your reactions, commentary, questions, and connections to your own life.
Independent Reading Log: a place for you to write about your own experiences as a reader. A standard entry should include the following:
- Book Title and Author
- Date and time
- Minutes spent reading
- Pages read (page # – page #)
- Notes on the reading process. This should be about a paragraph, and should be observations of yourself as a reader, not so much about the book itself. Some questions to guide you:
- Were you focused? Why?/Why not?
- What did & didn’t you understand?
- What strategies did you use when confused? When bored?
- What questions do you have about the book?
- What predictions can you make right now about what will happen next?
