Anecdote: a brief story about a single event–usually personal, historical, or funny.

Annotate: to make critical or explanatory notes on a text; to “mark up” a text as you read it. To annotate a text for this class, use the following symbols:

• *, !, or ______ : Parts that are interesting, important, or startling
• Circle a word when you don’t know its meaning—draw line to definition
• ?: Parts that are confusing
• }: In your own words
• >: Notes to yourself; connections to other ideas

Define 2x: find and write down the best possible definition from the dictionary and then write a second definition in your own words.

Homework Log: a two-paragraph response to an assigned reading text.

• Paragraph 1: Summary of the main ideas of the text.
• Paragraph 2: Your reactions, commentary, questions, and connections to your own life.

Independent Reading Log: a place for you to write about your own experiences as a reader. A standard entry should include the following:

• Book Title and Author
• Date and time
• Minutes spent reading
• Pages read (page # – page #)
• Notes on the reading process. This should be about a paragraph, and should be observations of yourself as a reader, not so much about the book itself. Some questions to guide you:
  • Were you focused? Why?/Why not?
  • What did & didn’t you understand?
  • What strategies did you use when confused? When bored?
  • What questions do you have about the book?
  • What predictions can you make right now about what will happen next?
